Funding boost to help local businesses

Successful applicants for the Enterprise Skill and Employment Grant, including small businesses, not for profit organisations and new entrepreneurs will receive a boost due to changes to the Colchester Borough Council funding being awarded this month.

The Enterprise Skills and Employment grant supports increased prosperity in the Borough, helping residents learn new skills to live and work to their full potential.

This year has seen a revision of the grant guidelines and what it aims to deliver, to ensure that the maximum possible benefit is gained from the funding. As a result, micro and start-up businesses are now able to apply alongside the traditional beneficiaries of the grant who are ‘not for profit’ organisations.

The recipients this year are Signpost Colchester, Space Studios, Summit Brew Coffee, Nano Training & Colchester and Tendring Youth Enquiry Service (YES).

The Borough has a wide and diverse range of more than 8,265 businesses, offering a broad base which is essential for a resilient economy. In 2016 there were 975 new businesses start-ups in the town. The Council is committed to supporting business in the Borough and helping residents gain assistance to help them get back into work. (Source: Colchester Business Demography, Nomis 2016.)

Councillor Tim Young, Portfolio Holder for Business and Culture, said: “We are delighted to award this grant funding to such worthwhile and exciting local organisations and small businesses. The Council is committed to helping local businesses start up and grow, and to giving people the chance to further their vocational skills and help keep Colchester’s economy thriving.”
