Visit Colchester is encouraging residents and tourists to get outside and explore Colchester on foot this summer. With the longer and lovely weather now here, it is the perfect time to join a 'Camulodunum to Colchester' guided tour and take in the town's long and rich history in the company of an Institute of Tourist Guiding qualified guide. All Visit Colchester tours are taken by qualified blue or green badge holders, the national standard guiding qualification which is universally recognised around the world as a mark of excellence.

Embarking on a walking tour is a superb way to get beneath the skin of Britain's Oldest Recorded Town. It offers a unique personal perspective and enables visitors to explore the local streetscape, heritage and culture of the town whilst at the same time benefitting from the guides in depth local knowledge. Not forgetting the health benefits on offer it is also a fantastic eco-friendly way to view the town!

An extended summer programme of walking tours is now on offer, with the Camulodunum to Colchester Tour leaving from the Visitor Information Centre at Hollytrees Museum, situated in Castle Park in the heart of Colchester's town centre. Tours run every Saturday at 11am; Bank Holidays at 2pm; with the mid-week tour on Wednesdays in June at 5pm and at 11am on during July, August and September.

In addition a themed tour programme on selected dates covers a range of subjects, such as the Roman Walls or The Siege of Colchester, in more depth.

Cllr Tim Young, Portfolio Holder for Business and Culture and Deputy Leader of the Council, said: “This summer Visit Colchester is inviting people to get outdoors, into the fresh air and take a moment away from the busy pace of life to discover what Colchester's famous walls and buildings could tell you.

“By taking the time out to take a walking tour you can find yourselves walking in the footsteps of famous characters from Colchester's past and truly immerse yourself in this town's rich history.”
