Visit Colchester has launched its first ever television advert to promote tourism to the borough with a new 30 second advert going live across all major Sky TV channels this summer.

Airing throughout the peak holiday period it is designed to draw more tourists to Britain's Oldest Recorded Town and First City and will be viewed nearly half a million times during this period.

The advert will be broadcast using the Sky Ad Smart system to key destinations within easy travel distance of Colchester. A longer 60 second version will be promoted on social media with a potential reach of 500,000.

The adverts creative, devised by Silverfish Media, complements the existing tourism campaign 'If Our Walls Could Talk'. It seeks to answer this question by showcasing Colchester's immense heritage alongside its wealth of contemporary attractions.

It highlights attractions such as the town's 900 year old Norman Castle, the oldest and longest Roman wall in Britain and the first Augustinian priory established in England. Other locations featured in the advert include St Botolphs Priory, the Minories, Firstsite, Mersea and Castle Park.

Cllr Tim Young, Deputy Leader of Colchester Borough Council and Portfolio Holder for Business and Culture, said"Colchester is a melting pot of culture, archaeology and attractions. Our borough offers something for everyone and this advert will help further cement our place as a key tourist destination in the East of England.

“Through raising the profile of the borough this advert will also help continue to boost the local economy by encouraging people to come and discover everything Colchester has to offer

“It focuses on some of our unique selling points for tourists, but when they arrive they will find there is so much more to Colchester. As well as the wealth of attractions in the town centre there is the beautiful Dedham Vale and Stour Valley where people can immerse themselves in Constable Country.

“Visitors can also go to Colne Valley and discover the majestic Victorian Chappel Viaduct and take a ride on a steam train, Colchester Zoo which has been voted one of the best in Europe, and Layer Marney Tower built during the reign of Henry VIII. They can also treat themselves to a cream tea with jam made by Wilkin and Son at their Tiptree home, or sample the town’s famous oysters during a trip to Mersea Island.”
