Do I need food business approval?

If you have a food business you may need to be approved by us under Regulation (EC) No. 853/2004.

Whether you need approval or not depends on your type of business. If you produce foods containing products of animal origin for sale to other businesses then your premises may need to be approved by us.

Some examples of types of premises that need to be approved by us are:

  • meat processing plants;
  • meat preparation plants;
  • minced meat processing operations;
  • mechanically separated meat processing plants; and
  • cold stores

This applies only if they are “stand alone”, meaning they are not attached to a slaughter house, cutting plant or game handling establishment.

Please note that if you do need approval and don’t have it yet, you can’t produce certain foods until we have approved you.

What if I want to make a consumer complaint about a food premises or business?

We would always advise that in the event of a complaint the first contact is made with the trader by you - preferably in the form a letter (with proof of delivery).

If that has not worked, if you are located in the UK, Consumer rights - GOV.UK will give you advice. From outside the UK contact the UK European Consumer Centre.
