Report a Stray Dog

What to do if you find a stray dog

  • What do I do if I find a lost dog?
  • What do I do if I've lost my dog?

If your pet is missing, or you have found a dog, please report it to us and we will do our best to reunite you with your pet. We collect stray dogs which are lost and found in the Colchester area and keep them in a kennel.

What do I do if I find a lost dog?

If you find a stray dog you can:

  • If the dog is wearing a collar and tag please try and contact the dog owner yourself.
  • You can contact our Animal Control team on 01206 282581 - Monday - Friday, 9.00am - 5.00pm and let them know that you have found a dog. A member of the team will then arrange to come and collect the dog from you.
  • During busy periods it can take us some time to collect the dog. While you are waiting try walking the dog around the area that it was found keeping the dog visible to see if the owner is already looking for them.
  • Take the dog to a local vet and ask them to scan it to see if they are microchipped, if they are then they can contact the owner.
  • It is best not to feed the dog, just allow them some water (some dogs do not travel well once fed).

What do I do if I've lost my dog?

If you have lost your dog you can:

  • Contact Animal Control on 01206 282581 Monday - Friday 9.00am - 5.00pm and let us know that your dog is lost. We will then put a description of your dog on the Lost Dog Register.
  • If your dog is microchipped call the chipping company to inform them.
  • Make sure that the details of your dog's microchip is up to date as if we find your dog we will try to contact you.
  • You can search the register of dogs that have been found by us.
  • Contact your local vets to see if your dog has been handed in and to report him/her missing
