The Town to Port project was conceived to improve public access to, and pedestrian link between, King Edward Quay, the town centre and the immediate surrounding areas. A series of new way-finders that incorporate public art have been installed to mark a trail along the Colne River and showcase the Hythe's unique history making it a destination for both local people and visitors to enjoy. The way-finding markers are at various locations between East Hill and King Edward Quay, improving the access to and details of the old port area.
As the Hythe area is undergoing rapid transformation and regeneration, the designers have responded to local residents' feedback to celebrate the Hythe's history as a significant trading port and major employer and source of income to Colchester. The design of the markers has been influenced by the area's industrial heritage and is created using gabion steel cages, of the type often used in civil engineering projects. These cages are filled with materials that were historically traded in the area, such as firebricks, oysters and coal, whilst large scale images and text will help give a sense of the Hythe as a trading port.
