Local Council Tax Support (working age)

You may be able to claim if:

  • you and your partner (if you have one) are working age (below State Pension age) 
  • you are liable to pay Council Tax at your address 
  • you are living in the property as your main home 
  • you have less than £6,000 in savings 

Entitlement is calculated using your net weekly household income and household size. 

Calculation rules and the percentage reduction 

All working age households will have to pay at least 20% of their Council Tax.

You are 'protected' and will receive 80% support if you or your partner (if applicable) receive at least one of the following:  

  • Income Support, Job Seekers Allowance (Income Based) or Employment Support Allowance (Income Related) 
  • Personal Independence Payments or Disability Living Allowance 
  • Employment Support Allowance with the Support Component  
  • Universal Credit with the Limited Capability for Work Element or Work-Related Activity element 
  • Working Tax Credit with disability element 
  • Severe Disablement Allowance 
  • Armed Forces Independence Payments 
  • Legally certified as blind 

For applicants who receive Universal Credit, the following allowances will be disregarded: 

  • Housing costs element 
  • Disabled child element 
  • Carers element 
  • Limited capability for work element 
  • Child care element  

Apply for Local Council Tax Support (working age only)

If you are eligible, we will send you a revised Council Tax bill showing the discount you are entitled to. 

If you are entitled, you will be allocated a 'band'. Every 'band' has its own corresponding code e.g. A1, B3, D5 etc.
