Local Council Tax Support (pension age)

Local Council Tax Support for pension age claimants is a 'means-tested' benefit that will be assessed using your household income and savings. Pension age claimants can receive up to 100% of their Council Tax paid if they are on a low income.

This policy is set by central government and Colchester City Council has no influence over the regulations of this scheme.

You may be able to claim if:

  • you and your partner (if applicable) are State Pension age
  • you are liable to pay Council Tax
  • you are living in the property as your main home
  • you have less than £16,000 in savings (unless you recieve Pension Credit Guarantee Credit)
The level of reduction in your Council Tax will depend on your income, savings, who lives with you, and the amount of Council Tax you are expected to pay.

What happens next?

We will consider your application and let you know:
  • if we need more information from you
  • if your claim has been successful or not
  • how much has been awarded and what your ongoing Council Tax payments will be (if any)
Any award of Local Council Tax Support will be credited directly to your Council Tax account and you will be issued with a revised bill.
