How insect complaints are assessed
If insects from a nearby business are affecting your home or garden, you can report the problem to us.
Businesses that are often sources of insects include:
You may be asked to keep a record of the problem by completing the diary record sheets.
We will then decide if the problem is a statutory nuisance and advise the owner on any action they should take.
If we find that the problem is a statutory nuisance, an abatement notice can be served. Anyone who continues to break the law can be fined.

- sewage treatment works
- manure or silage storage areas
- animal or poultry houses
- landfill sites, tips and waste transfer stations
What happens next
When you make a complaint, an officer will visit the premises to make an assessment.You may be asked to keep a record of the problem by completing the diary record sheets.
We will then decide if the problem is a statutory nuisance and advise the owner on any action they should take.
If we find that the problem is a statutory nuisance, an abatement notice can be served. Anyone who continues to break the law can be fined.
