General Election 04 July 2024

On Thursday 4 July 2024 there will be a Parliamentary General Election.

A new set of constituencies will be used for the 2024 Parliamentary General Election. The Colchester City Council area comprises three different Parliamentary constituencies, find further information.

Who is eligible to vote in a UK Parliamentary election?

To vote in a UK Parliamentary election you must be registered to vote. You must also be 18 or over on the day of the election. You must also be one of the following: a British citizen; an Irish citizen; a qualifying Commonwealth citizen; or a British Citizen living overseas.


You can register to vote online. If you have registered to vote at your property and have not moved since you do not need to re-register to vote. If you are unsure if you are registered, you can contact us to check.

You are required to bring photo ID when voting at a polling station. Find more information on voter ID requirements.

Postal and proxy votes

If you are unable to vote in person, you can apply for either a postal vote or proxy vote. Any applications should be made as soon as possible.

Verification and count

All votes will be counted overnight following the close of poll at 10pm on Thursday 4 July with a result expected to be declared early hours of the morning. The count will be held in the hall at the Northern Gateway Colchester Sports Park.
