Covid-19 Additional Relief Fund (CARF)

The Government has provided Colchester with £3,981,564 to provide business rates relief on 2021/22 rates bills for businesses affected by Covid-19, but who were not eligible for previous relief schemes.

Who will be supported

The relief is for businesses which have been financially adversely affected as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Financial impact can include a loss in income due to restrictions placed on your business sector OR significantly increased operating costs due to the impact of Covid-19, such as increased staffing levels, which has resulted in a reduced turn over or profit.

Businesses will be asked to upload evidence to support their application.

The following criteria applies:

  • Businesses must not be eligible for other Covid-19 related business rates reliefs of discounts.
  • Businesses must have occupied a rated premises in Colchester since 31 March 2021.
    • Businesses which have remained trading but have moved premises during this time will be considered for the relief, however they must have occupied a rated premises in Colchester on 31st March 2021 and have moved to another occupied rated premises within the borough.

How much relief will be provided

The funding provided for this scheme is limited, therefore we are not able to confirm the exact level of relief until all applications have been assessed. All businesses will be provided the same level of up to 100% relief if they are found eligible.

The application process

If you have previously applied online and received a discretionary business grant

If your business grant application was successful, we will send you an email with a link to update your existing application form. This means that you do not have to provide information that you have already given. You will be asked additional questions specific to this scheme and be requested to upload evidence.

If you have not previously applied online OR your business grant application was unsuccessful

Businesses will be required to apply for CARF online using the 'Apply now' link below.

Before you start

The form cannot be saved part way. 

When completing an application for CARF business rates relief, you will be asked to provide evidence of the financial impact for your business. This can include accounts, bank statements or profit and loss accounts, you will need to include the same evidence from 2019/20 to evidence the loss.

During the assessment of your application, we may request additional evidence if required. The team will aim to assess applications as quickly as possible.

If successful you will receive a confirmation email along with a revised Business Rates Bill showing the relief applied - the relief only applies to Business Rates Bills for the financial year 2021/22.
