Single Person Discount and Disregarded People

Single Person Discount
When we work out how much Council Tax you need to pay, we assume that there are two adults living in your home.
If you are the only adult living in your home (as your main home) you are entitled to a 25% single person discount on your Council Tax bill.

Disregarded People Discounts
In some circumstances, we may 'disregard' (ignore) certain adults living in your property.
When we look at the number of adults living in a property for Council Tax purposes, we do not include:
- Full-time students, student nurses, apprentices, and youth trainees
- People who are severely mentally disabled
- People receiving long term hospital care
- People permanently living in a care home
- People staying in some hostels or night shelters
- 18 and 19 year olds who are still in education or who have recently left school, where Child Benefit is still being paid
- People in prison or other forms of detention, except those imprisoned for:
- non-payment of Council Tax
- a Council Tax-related fine
- Carers employed by a Local Authority or charitable body or people caring for someone who receives a qualifying benefit who are not caring for their partner or their own child (a child is someone under 18) find more information.
- Members of visiting forces and certain international organisations
- People with diplomatic immunity and their spouse or civil partner (who are not British citizens)
- People in prison or other forms of detention
- Except those imprisoned for non-payment of Council Tax or a Council Tax–related fine
- Members of Religious communities
