Can you tell me about your bike and why you chose it?
I have got an E-Explorer eBike which I chose after trying out a few different options at the Eco Festival. I was looking for a robust bike to allow me to cycle through Hilly Fields and a bike with a low step to allow me to get on more easily with my disability which the E-Explorer could provide.
Why did you start using an eBike?
I cycled a lot when I was younger, but it was becoming more physically demanding and after surgery that removed a lot of muscle from my leg, cycling became very difficult and I would tire on long journeys.
After trying out eBikes at the Eco Festival, I knew it was for me. My eBike has allowed me to carry on cycling and not worry about going longer distances which I now often do.
What do you normally use your bike for?
After I retired, I gave away my car to encourage myself to walk and cycle more often.
I now use my bike for any journey under 5 miles such as going into the city centre, visiting friends and shopping and for leisure rides of 10-12 miles or longer.
I do have access to my partners car but wherever possible, I use my bike to travel.
What do you feel are the benefits of using a bike for these journeys?
It is enjoyable to be outside and I like being able to exercise. I am able to travel further than if I was walking and get out into the countryside. You can sometimes travel faster than cars at rush hours and you don’t have to worry about traffic.
I cannot underestimate the feeling of wellbeing you get from cycling and with an eBike my disability is no longer a barrier. And it's one less car on the road which can only be good for the environment.
How do you find riding an eBike compared to a standard bike?
My eBike rides quite similarly to a standard bike and you can put as much power in as you want.
I have found that I use the electric part of my bike to get me up hills, which I was unable to do on my old bike, and to use more boost as I tire so I can, when necessary, actually float along really easily. But some of the time I use it with no electric boost or use the minimal setting, so I am still getting the benefit of keeping fitter.
How do you find using the City Centre Secure Bike Park?
It is very convenient and in a good location. Even though my bike is insured, I don’t want it to be stolen but I know that I don’t have to worry about it when it is in the Secure Bike Park.
