City centre pay as you go eBike/eCargo bike hire
The city centre bike hub is located in Portal Precinct (via the courtyard entrance off Sir Isaac’s Walk between Fast-Stitch and Tea Rose Café opposite Noa Noa – postcode CO1 1JJ). The hub includes pay as you go eBike/eCargo bike hire, a secure bike park and Colchester Bike Kitchen.
The hub is open 7am to 10pm daily.
Arranging a pay as you go hire
- Email ecargo.bikelibrary@colchester.gov.uk to arrange an induction.
- Complete the free adult advanced cycle training if you are not confident cycling on roads and busy junctions.
- Once you have completed an induction, you can book the bikes through our partner Spokesafe.
- £3 minimum booking for up to 2 hours.
- £4.50 for up to 3 hours.
- £6 for up to 4 hours.
- £10 daily rental for over 4 hours.
- opt to pay a returnable deposit upfront, returnable when you leave the service
- or pay a deposit each time, and have it returned when the bike is returned on time and with no damage
Pay as you go prices
If you return the bike late without extending your booking or advising Spokesafe that you are going to be late a £30 penalty will be applied.
Deposit
We take a £50 deposit in case of late return or damage. You can either:Bikes available for rent
Raleigh eBike
Standard electric bike with spacious storage bags.

Riese and Muller Multicharger eBike
This is similar to a standard electric bike, except it is longer at the back and has extra large storage bags. You can also fit two children on the back, one behind the other, with safety bars.

Riese and Muller Load 75 eCargo bike
This eCargo bike can carry two children, shopping or bulky items. It includes two seatbelts and a padded cushion for the children to sit on. It has a rain cover for covering goods and kids.

Bakfiet long eCargo bike
This traditional eCargo bike can carry up to 4 children in the front and has 4 seat belts. The front seats can be removed to provide lots of space for shopping or bulky items. It also has a rain cover for covering children and goods.
