A blueprint for the future: the next 100 years of Colchester

Colchester City Centre

At the heart of Colchester our City Centre is vital to our place socially and economically. It’s been that way for 2,000 years and remains somewhere to live, learn, shop, eat, visit and work.

City centres have adapted over time, Colchester is no exception. Those that thrive recognise the modern challenges and plan for them. Working with partners including Essex County Council and key stakeholders and following a public consultation, the City Centre Masterplan has been developed and together with major regeneration already underway sets out the vision and ambition, ensuring one of the most important historic centres in Britain thrives long into the future.

Colchester City Centre is rich in heritage, visitor attractions and a strong retail and leisure offer. It plays many vital roles for residents and attracts millions of visits each year from further field.

Significant investment in the City centre continues to enhance it and is a sign of its strength. In recent years this has included £55m which has delivered the new Fenwick store, the new Primark store, Ultrafast gigabit broadband, an upgrade of the Priory Street car park, a new public space around The Mercury Theatre and 9 ‘Parklets’ in the High Street.
