The Jumbo Project and Balkerne Gate
In partnership with North Essex Heritage, we are committed to preserving the Grade II* listed Balkerne Water Tower, affectionately known as Jumbo, and creating a welcoming public space at Balkerne Gate.
With the recent securing of an £8 million grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, and £1.1 million from government grants, we are thrilled to move forward with the transformation of this iconic landmark. This funding will play a vital role in bringing our vision to life.
The project includes restoring Jumbo and enhancing the surrounding public space. Thanks to this generous grant, we are well on our way to creating a prominent heritage attraction and a community hub for Colchester and beyond by 2027.
The Jumbo Project
North Essex Heritage is leading the effort to restore Jumbo, with plans to transform it into a sustainable venue that retains its historic charm.
The vision includes converting the space into a restaurant, event venue, and visitor experience. Work is underway to secure more funding and ensure that Jumbo remains a beloved landmark for future generations.

Balkerne Gate Public Realm
Balkerne Gate, the nation's oldest standing Roman gateway, underwent a facelift in 2021 with a revamped kerbless area around the Mercury Theatre.
As we progress towards establishing Jumbo for public use, preparations are underway to finalise the Balkerne Gate public space. This area will provide communities and visitors alike with the chance to relax and appreciate Jumbo before ascending to the heritage experience.
The redesigned space will feature a highly accessible kerbless public realm, encompassing new trees and seating, stretching across a wide area enveloping the Colchester Arts Centre and presenting fresh business opportunities.
