Your stories – Graham Womack

Graham Womack
Volunteer Ranger, High Woods Country Park

How long have you worked for the council?

Beginning of 2000.

Why did you choose to work for the council?

I wanted to give something back to the community, while working in the countryside.

Describe what you do in 100 words

As a volunteer ranger I have been involved with a wide range of activities, including patrolling the country park sites, answering visitors’ queries, conservation and maintenance tasks, assisting with organised events (guided walks, fishing days, etc.), monitoring livestock used for conservation grazing, carrying out biodiversity surveys.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

Meeting other volunteers from a variety of backgrounds and learning new skills.

Throughout your career at the council, what has been your most rewarding moment?

Overall, I’ve found that volunteering gave me the opportunity to try something outside of my usual day job.

What would you say to someone thinking about a career at the council?

Just give it a try.
