Colchester Borough Council is providing support for residents facing the cost of living crisis.

The 2021 Census

On Sunday 21 March 2021 millions of people across England and Wales completed their Census. It was the first digital Census, run predominantly online, with households receiving a letter with a unique access code, allowing them to complete the questionnaire on their computers, phones, and tablets.

  • On Census day 2021, the population of Colchester was estimated at 192,700 (an increase of 11.3% from 173,100 in 2011)
  • The estimated number of households across the borough was 79,300 (an increase of 11.3% 71,600)
  • Colchester is the 19th most densely populated of the East of England's 45 local authority areas.
  • In Colchester there has been an increase of 25.6% in people aged 65 years and over. The largest age group in the East of England was those aged 50 to 54 years.
