The 2021 Census
On Sunday 21 March 2021 millions of people across England and Wales completed their Census. It was the first digital Census, run predominantly online, with households receiving a letter with a unique access code, allowing them to complete the questionnaire on their computers, phones, and tablets.

- On Census day 2021, the population of Colchester was estimated at 192,700 (an increase of 11.3% from 173,100 in 2011)
- The estimated number of households across the city was 79,300 (an increase of 11.3% 71,600)
- Colchester is the 19th most densely populated of the East of England's 45 local authority areas.
- There has been an increase of 25.6% in people aged 65 years and over. The largest age group in the East of England was those aged 50 to 54 years.
