You must be on the Electoral Register to vote in local and national elections. The Electoral Register is the list of everyone who is registered to vote in a local area. You won't be automatically registered even if you pay council tax. You cannot register to vote online, you need to complete a voter registration form which must be signed by yourself.
There are two versions of the register - the full version and the edited version (sometimes called the Edited Register'). Your details will appear on the full version of the register but you can choose to exclude your details from the revised version when registering.
You can check to see if you're already registered by viewing the edited register at the Town Hall between 9 am and 5.30pm or make an appointment to come into Rowan House, Sheepen Road, Colchester CO3 3WG to view the full register. To make an appointment, please email: elections@colchester.gov.uk or telephone 01206 508904 or 282235 between 9am and 5.30pm.
The Elections team at Colchester Borough Council administers our Electoral Register and the information here shows you how to register to vote.
You can find detailed information on the Electoral Commission's 'About my vote' website. This includes advice if you're a British Citizen living abroad, in the armed forces serving abroad or you're from another country. You can find registration forms in other languages there too.
The Council's Elections team carries out an audit of all homes in the borough every autumn and publishes the Revised Electoral Register in December.
