Colchester Borough Council and Colchester Borough Homes provide a number of services that help older residents lead healthy, safe, independent and active lives.


Activity Centres
Membership is open to over-50's and is free.  Both centres provide activities and delicious lunches are served daily.

Anchor Staying Put - home repairs and adaptations
Anchor Staying Put provides information, advice, support and practical help to enable older people repair and adapt their homes.

 Assisted Gardening Scheme and Special Internal Decorating Service
If you are over 60 or have a disability, and live in a property managed by Colchester Borough Homes, you may be able to get assistance with gardening or decorating a room in your property.

Community Safety
Community Safety can help you make your home more secure by giving advice and, in some cases, arranging for the provision of fitting of improved locks, spy holes and door chains.

Older people can receive help and advice about all aspects of Housing Benefit and Council Tax benefit, including how to claim and reductions following home adaptations because of a disability.

Handyperson Scheme
If you are over 60 and live in a property managed by Colchester Borough Homes you may be able to get help with odd jobs and small repairs around the home.

Health Walks
There are "Health Walks" through the lovely countryside of High Woods Country Park and historic beautiful Castle Park. Leaflets, containing the routes, are available at both venues.  There is also a programme of leader-led walks at High Woods.

Helpline - Community Alarms
Helpline can supply an alarm with a pendant to promote independent living with the safe knowledge that there is always someone to deal with emergencies at the touch of a button.

If you are a tenant or homeowner aged 60 or over you may be able to get short term assistance with budgeting, shopping or cleaning.

Leisure World over 50+ sessions
Club 50+ provides a variety of fitness, sporting and social activities.  The programme has been designed to meet the needs of the mature active adult and provide a safe and effective form of exercise in a relaxed environment.

Sheltered Housing
Colchester Borough Homes manages 23 schemes for older tenants.  These provide easily managed homes that enable people to keep their dignity, privacy and independence.  Two schemes provide extra-care services with individual care packages.
