Colchester's Castle re-opens!
Date Published: 25 May 2005
Colchester Castle will be re-opening its doors to two thousand years of adventure again at 10am on 28 May after a temporary closure for essential roof repairs.
The project has taken four weeks to complete and has been something akin to a military exercise to get the extensive work finished on time. From Wednesday 25 May, curators and collection experts will start to put back on display the internationally renowned objects from Colchester's rich and fascinating past that had been removed to storage for safely whilst the roof work was being completed.
Marie Taylor marketing officer said: "Now the repairs are complete this means that the roof is good for another 15 years and so were glad to say it's back to business as normal welcoming our visitors and wowing them with the international collections and amazing stories for all to enjoy within the ancient walls of Europe's largest Norman Keep."
Staff are eager to hear the familiar sound of the interactive museum exhibits and the many visitors who come to the awarding-winning museum to get in touch with their past again.
They look forward to welcoming and seeing the daily groups of school pupils queuing on the Castle bridge waiting for the doors to open to an exciting days adventure into their past were learning is so much fun.
Special tours of the roof and roman vaults will be available again to the public given added value behind the scenes highlights and our guides will skilfully bring this amazing town and Castle's history to life. Visitors will see the roof improvements and once again enjoy this unique experience learn some thing new and leave with the memory of the wonderful views over the town and stunning surrounding Essex countryside.
Kicking off the re-opening and June events On Bank Holiday Monday 30 May - 2 June are the Saxon time travelling re-enactors at the Castle. This is when our visitors can meet the hen-pecked Saxon builder Eadrich and his moaning wife Agatha. She has been at him to get a job and he has finally landed the best in Colchester. He is working for those nasty Normans to build the largest Castle in Europe. She's not amused he's working for the Normans but you will be amused and enlightened when this pair bring the Norman and Saxon era to life with a lot of humour thrown in for good measure.
This event is part of our commitment to add value to visitors experience and interpret our history in a fun and engaging way this event is free to join in on after admission to the Castle.
