Opening Colchester up to the possibility of greener spaces
Date Published: 23 March 2007
Access to open spaces is a key priority for Colchester Borough Council and residents are being asked for their views as part of a new strategy to improve the amount of green spaces available in the borough.
Colchester Borough Council is developing the Parks and Green Spaces Strategy, which looks at what open spaces are already provided in the borough and to ensure that the regeneration taking place in Colchester and the associated increased number of residents is matched with appropriate provision of parks and open spaces.
The draft strategy identifies the need to make provision for the future and also aims to ensure that current spaces or parks are protected, maintained and enhanced where necessary.
Councillor Kevin Bentley, Portfolio Holder for Culture and Public Relations, said: "Colchester already holds an excellent reputation for the quality and amount of open, green space available for residents to use and enjoy. Not only are we determined to keep this reputation, but we also want to build on it by continuing to provide quality parks and green spaces and meet the needs of our expanding community. This is what the strategy sets out to do.
"Parks and open spaces bring a range of benefits. Not only are they an attractive place to be, but they also encourage people to use them for social purposes and for physical exercise.
"By producing this strategy and acting upon it we will be taking an important step forward to help improve the quality of life for the people of Colchester."
Consultation on the draft strategy will start this summer with the approved strategy set to be in place later this year.
