Identity (ID) theft occurs when someone steals and uses your personal and or financial information to gain something.

Identifying information is linked to: your National Insurance number, date of birth, address, bank details, family names, car registration, driving licence number, tax code, credit or debit card numbers and utility bills. Thieves commit fraud by using your ID to fix their immediate problems or the commit further crime using your name. Identity theft is serious and the effect on the victim can be damaging.
Some identity theft victims can resolve their problems quickly but others may spend many days (and sometimes hundreds of pounds) repairing the damage to their good name and credit record. People victimised by identity theft may lose out on job opportunities, denied loans for education, housing or cars because of negative information on their credit reports.
