Regeneration of the Garrison

Date Published: 11 April 2006

There has been an Army Garrison in Colchester for centuries. Following the Ministry of Defence's commitment to construct a modern replacement garrison, the town's long association with the Army looks set to continue.

The Army's presence makes a significant contribution to the vitality and economic wellbeing of the borough, by providing 5,000 direct jobs and indirectly supporting the local service sector. The new garrison will safeguard these jobs for the foreseeable future. In addition to the new purpose-built garrison, the existing garrison site will be redeveloped to provide a new urban village based around Abbey Field, including:

  • 2,600 new homes
  • new employment uses
  • additional sports, leisure and community facilities
  • potential for an integrated, sustainable transport system
  • retention of, and alternative uses for the listed buildings on the site
