Essex Dementia Day

Friday 19th January marks Essex Dementia Day and Colchester Borough Council will be recognising the day with a variety of events that you, your friends and family can get involved in.

There is estimated to be over 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK, over 20,000 in Essex, an estimated 1256 people would have been diagnosed in 2017 in Colchester which is 60% of the over 65 population. Dementia is something that could affect all of us in some form at some point in our life and has a higher health and social care cost than cancer and chronic heart disease.

On the day Colchester Borough Council will be hosting an awareness-raising event on the Market on Colchester High Street between 9.30am and 2.30pm promoting ways in which we can all do more to support both those living with dementia and their carers. Please come and see us or spread the words to your friends and family.

You can find out how to become a Dementia Friend, an initiative to improve society's understanding of dementia and then we can turn understanding into action. Our actions, big or small, can develop a more dementia friendly community. You can become a dementia friend by watching a video and signing up online: https://www.dementiafriends.org.uk

There are 3 initiatives available for Colchester residents living with dementia should they come into trouble either at home or out and about; the market stall will have information about these on the day. Alternatively, see below for links to the three initiatives:

Between 11am and 1pm, there will be a similar stall at Lion Walk Activity Centre to offer information to their members. Members and volunteers will also be encouraged to 'wear it blue' and be able to donate to charity.
So, please either go online or come and visit us, spread the word and if we all find out a little more about dementia, we can support those living with it and make our community a more dementia friendly one.
