What will you see?  What can you do?

You should know…

Please be aware that screen prints from this service cannot be used as location or site plans when making a planning application.  Colchester Borough Council operates an Ordnance Survey Mapping and Data Centre to provide appropriate plans, available at Customer Services.  Alternatively plans can be purchased online.

What will you see?  What can you do?

The system starts off with a view of the whole borough and shows various Ordnance Survey maps that change in detail as you zoom in or out.

c-maps offers the following features:

  • Address search – this allows you to search for an address anywhere in the borough and once chosen, the map will automatically zoom to it.
  • Overview Map – this allows you to see where you are located within the borough and easily move to a newly defined area.
  • Toolbar – the buttons here allow you to manually customise the map you are viewing.
  • Find My Nearest - this allows you to click a location on the map and carry out a search of various council services and other local facilities within a specified radius.
  • Points of interest – a list of points, once clicked you are automatically taken to the relevant area on the map.

The data showing the location of the council’s various facilities and services has been organised into several ‘Themes’.

Need some help?

c-maps is easy to use, but if you do encounter problems then please start here in an attempt to resolve them.

Technical Information

  •  c-maps is a web-based Geographical Information System (GIS), which we have built around a product called PlanAccess from Pitney Bowes MapInfo.
  • The minimum specification for c-maps is:
    • Internet Explorer 4 or Netscape Navigator 4
    • 56kbps dial up internet connection.
  • If the c-maps window does not appear:  Check whether you have any ‘anti pop-up’ software installed on your computer.  A new window will pop-up when you first click to use c-maps as well as when you are using the tools within the system.  Please ensure that you allow pop-up’s when using this site otherwise c-maps will not show details as required.
  • If the c-maps window appears but no map is displayed: You may need to download free Java Runtime Environment software in order to view the maps.  Downloading instructions and free software can be found at: http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp
