Colchester Year of Celebration

2012 Colchester Year of Celebration logo

Colchester Borough Council launched its Year of Celebration facebook campaign on Wednesday 21 December. It's designed to engage with residents, businesses and organisations throughout the Borough who wish to make 2012 a year to remember.

The facebook page, called Enjoy Colchester encourages others to join in and keep up to date of all the new and exciting things happening in 2012.

Nationally there's the Diamond Jubilee plus the Olympic and Paralympic celebrations. But we have our own reasons to celebrate with events such as the launch of the Digital Strategy at the beginning of the year, 21st year of Helpline and all the great work it carries out across the region, plus the return of the Tour Series in June, the numerous cultural Olympiad celebrations topped off by the Treasures of China exhibitions. Colchester Borough Council is keen to hear of other events and celebrations taking place in the Borough next year.

Anne Turrell, Leader of Colchester Borough Council, commented 'This is a new and exciting approach for us. We appreciate that things aren't easy at this moment so we want to offer as much support to others with a few good reasons to remember 2012. By embracing this social media approach I hope we can reach a wider audience and make people feel engaged in their local community.
The Council will run a number of events next year and this is the most cost effective way to reach every part of our Borough. It will also be supported by advertising both on and offline. As we welcome the Olympic Torch Relay to town, we will want as many local residents to come out and mark the countdown to the 2012 Olympic Games, to name just one.
Via our new online newsletter the e-Courier, we've already been contacted by Colchester United regarding their celebratory year next year and they welcome this opportunity to help promote all the fun things they have on the horizon.'

So whether you, your employer or local group are celebrating a big birthday, a major anniversary or a special occasion, join the 'Enjoy Colchester' facebook campaign and tell others how you intend to make 2012 a year to remember. Colchester Borough Council already has a Twitter Account, Your Colchester, with around 700 followers and daily tweets by a wide variety of individuals and organisations and hopes to build on its success.
