Clear bags for plastics, paper, card and textiles. Green boxes for glass, cans and foil.
Clear recycling sacks and green recycling boxes are available for free from a number of locations in the borough (please see the table below). Pick-ups are limited to one recycling box and one roll of clear sacks per property; your name and address will be recorded at each pick-up. However, there is no limit on the number of green boxes that households can have at home or put out for emptying. As well as using green boxes provided by the Council, you may also use other plastic boxes of similar shape and size, with carrying handles or cut-outs for lifting.
Please do not use clear bags or carrier bags to put glass and cans out for collection. As well as contaminating the recycling they are not strong enough to contain these materials, potentially leading to the bags splitting, and increase the risk of broken glass which is a safety concern for the collection crews. It is also important that recycling is clean and this cannot be checked if carrier bags are used.
White sacks for garden waste
White garden waste sacks are available from a number of locations in the borough (please see table below) at £3.50 each. Alternatively, you may use sacks of similar size, construction and shape with a handle on the bottom. Please do not use plastic bags to put garden waste out for collection. As well as contaminating the recycling they are not strong enough to contain this material, potentially leading to the bags splitting.
Worn out garden waste bags can be exchanged for free at a number of locations across the Borough; these locations are noted in the table above. If you receive an assisted recycling and rubbish collection, worn out garden waste sacks be exchanged at your home for free.
Customers moving into new an existing property without sacks or a new-build property can claim four sacks free of charge from the Customer Service Centre only - in person or by email to recycling@colchester.gov.uk.
Black bags for non-recyclable rubbish
Every household in the borough has one roll of black bags delivered to their property in April or May every year - that's apart from flats with communal recycling and rubbish bins. You can use any black bags for your non-recyclable rubbish and do not need to use "Council bags". If you require extra black bags, you can buy these from your local supermarket or general store.
Colchester Borough Council does not collect rubbish from wheelie bins placed at the kerbside.
If you are unable to pick up your recycling container(s), you can can Order recycling boxes, bags and sacks for home delivery or alternatively you can email your request to recycling@colchester.gov.uk within six months of moving in.
