Local Authority Carbon Management Programme (LACM)

Keeping you updated on how we are doing our bit, this section explains the different projects that the Council have developed to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions.

Local Authority Carbon Management Programme (LACM)

As your local Council we have a responsibility not only to make sure that we reduce our own Carbon Footprint as much as possible but we also must act as a community leader and help others to do the same.

Our Carbon Footprint is shrinking!

We are now taking part in the Local Authority Carbon Management (LACM) programme with the Carbon Trust and through this have committed to:

Reduce CO2 emissions by 25% in Council buildings by 2012.

Our LACM Strategy and Implementation plan has now been adopted and can be seen by clicking on the link below. This document includes information on the Councils energy usage baseline and the different projects that will help us to become more energy efficient.

So far we have been making a huge effort to raise awareness of Climate Change and reducing CO2 emissions within the Council. With nearly 1000 employees we felt this would be a good place to start and has so far allowed us to save around 70 tonnes of CO2 or around £20,000 in energy costs.

We also have some very exciting buildings projects up ours sleeves that will help to make huge CO2 savings so 'watch this space'!

So what can we do for you?

To show our commitment in becoming a community leader on Climate Change and energy awareness we have now signed the Nottingham Declaration. Now that we have started getting our own house in order we want to share our experience and knowledge with you and help you to do the same.

We have developed this website to give you all the information you may need about Climate Change and how you can do your bit. Over the next few years we are hoping to work with businesses, schools and community groups in Colchester and reduce CO2 emissions across the borough.

We are part of Colchester 2020 Travel Plan which also helps people to leave their cars at home, not only will this be beneficial to the environment but will also reduce traffic on our roads. Click here to find out more.

Colchester Borough Council has a strategic waste team who are dedicated to improving recycling across the borough. For more information on recycling please click here.

We also now have a dedicated Warm Homes Project officer who can offer advice on various schemes for home insulation, some people may be eligible for free insulation. For more information please email  warmhomes@colchester.gov.uk
