Date issued: 7 March 2018

The finalists for this year's prestigious Essex Digital Awards have been announced and Colchester Borough Council feature in two of the categories.

Visit Colchester have been shortlisted in the Best Use of Video category for the I Spy video shorts which are part of the current tourism campaign and Reece Cycler the Council's blog about recycling has also made it through to the final stages in the Best Blog category.

Visit Colchester have developed six 60 second video shorts designed specifically for social media to promote the town's tourism offering. The videos are part of the current two-year tourism campaign, with each one aimed at a different segment of the tourism industry. The most popular aimed at a family day out in Colchester has reached a wide audience achieving views on Facebook from a boosted post of 22,541 and over 1900 views via You Tube to date. The film is regularly used on Visit Colchester's social media channels to a warm reception.

Cllr Tim Young, Portfolio Holder for Business and Culture and Deputy Leader of the Council said: "It's fantastic to see the tourism campaign that Visit Colchester have worked so hard on recognised in this manner. Video is a powerful medium and what better way to attract tourists to the Borough than by showing them what is available to them through video. Whether part of a family, a group trip, a group of friends or an older couple looking for a weekend retreat of history, culture and stunning countryside, Colchester has something to offer everyone. Opening Colchester up to tourists is a key priority and one which we are committed to. We will have everything crossed for the 3 May and for now simply becoming a finalist is recognition enough.

Reece Cycler, the recycling blog has gone from strength to strength since launch in May 2017. Originally launched to help publicise the changes to the Council's recycling and rubbish collection in June 2017, the blog has proved a great success offering recycling advice and handy tips. As a result of the blog and other educational work around recycling the Council's recycling rates have greatly improved and Reece Cycler remains a helpful tool for residents to follow the latest recycling developments and learn what they could be doing to recycle more at home.

Cllr Jessica Scott-Boutell, Portfolio Holder for Waste and Sustainability, said: "I'm thrilled that the Reece Cycler blog has been shortlisted in the Best Blog category for the Essex Digital Awards. The blog is popular and is proving a useful tool to support our recycling education messages and engage with residents. The blog aims to help make it a bit easier for people to fit recycling into their everyday lives by providing information and tips and answering questions residents have.

"In the five months following the introduction of this new system, recycling increased dramatically. Between July and November 2017, the Borough recycled 55% of all its rubbish - a big improvement on the 44% recycling rate seen at year end in March 2017."

The Essex Digital Awards are now in their fifth year have become synonymous with excellence in the digital marketing space. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony at Hylands House, Chelmsford on the 3 May, and promises to be a great evening celebrating digital talent county wide.
