Spring into action to clean up Colchester

Date issued: 19 February 2018

Colchester Borough Council is encouraging residents to take part in the 2018 Great British Spring Clean, during the weekend of 2-4 March.

Organised by national charity Keep Britain Tidy, the annual event aims to get 500,000 volunteers across the country out and about tidying up streets, beaches, rivers and countryside.

Last year, over 1,000 volunteers signed up to spruce up their neighbourhoods as part of the Spring Clean, and collectively cleared 975kg (0.95 tonnes) of litter from the Borough's streets.

Litter blights our communities and anyone caught dropping rubbish, including cigarette butts, can now be issued with a £100 fixed penalty notice.

The Great British Spring Clean aims to encourage pride in communities and change people's behaviour, to reduce the prevalence and impact of litter on our environment. By mobilising to combat littering, volunteers can help protect and improve areas that are special to them -- creating a lasting legacy of a cleaner, tidier Colchester the whole community can be proud of.

Volunteers can organise their own event or get involved in an existing one in their local area. Council Zone Teams will collect and dispose of all the rubbish, after each clean-up has taken place.

Cllr Tina Bourne, Portfolio Holder for Housing and Communities, said: "Litter not only looks unpleasant, it is dangerous to wildlife and pets, and can eventually enter the oceans and pollute the marine environment.

"Taking part in events like the Great British Spring Clean gives thousands of people the chance to combine their efforts and make a difference together.

"I encourage all residents to take part and enjoy the day - it's such a great way to teach young family members about caring for the environment too!"

Residents can register to take part in the Colchester Great British Spring Clean at or by calling 01206 282222. Tweet or post your photos on the day using #GBSpringClean and #litterhero, and join the national buzz around the event.

The best image featuring participants wearing superhero outfits while out litter-picking in the Borough, will win four tickets to Colchester Castle.

Residents who would like to make a regular difference to their local area can also sign up to become Litter Warriors. In groups of up to 20 friends, family or neighbours, Litter Warrior's pledge 16 hours per month to keep their community spick and span.

All equipment, plus a Litter Warrior hi-vis jacket each, is provided by the Council, who will also collect your haul of litter at the end of your clean-up. Interested residents can find out more at
