Tree giveaway expected to be 'poplar' once again

Date issued: 24 January 2018

Colchester Borough Council is delighted to announce that it will again be running the Trees for Years giveaway, in association with grounds maintenance company idverde, on Saturday 3 February.

Now in its twelfth year, this much-loved scheme provides over 2,000 free trees and fruit bushes to local residents, community groups, schools and town or parish councils. It supports the Council's aim of creating a green, healthy borough for people to live, work and play in.

From 10am-1pm on the day, or until stock runs out, 2,018 trees will be available for residents to collect from Rowan House, Sheepen Road. Members of the Council's Parks Team will be on hand to advise which plants are suitable for your size of garden. Last year, around 700 people attended the event and all the plants had been snapped up by midday -- so be quick!

Each household will be able to take up to three plants, and residents are asked to bring their own bags. Schools, community groups or parish councils can take up to fifteen. All trees are bare-root and range in height from 50cm to 1.2m.

Cllr Tina Bourne, Portfolio Holder for Housing and Communities, said: "Trees for Years gives residents a chance to enjoy beautiful plants in their own gardens and to help our environment. The event is always hugely popular, showing that Colchester residents share our commitment to creating an attractive, green place to live. Thanks to idverde, for their continued sponsorship this year."
