Colchester recycling collection days to change over Christmas

Date published: 18 December 2017

Residents are being reminded by Colchester Borough Council that their recycling and rubbish collection days will change for one week between Christmas and New Year.

Between 25-30 December, all recycling and waste collections will be one day later than usual. For example, if your usual collection day is Tuesday, your containers will be picked up on Wednesday instead. These changes are due to the timing of Christmas Day and Boxing Day Bank Holidays.

In Colchester, different recycling and waste types are collected on alternating weeks, known as Green and Blue Weeks. The order of these will remain the same.

The Council is also encouraging people to watch what they waste over Christmas. Nationally, we create 30 per cent more waste than usual over the Christmas period.

However, most of what is used at Christmas can be recycled:

  • Wrapping paper can be placed in the clear paper recycling bag, unless it's covered in glitter or metallic foil.
  • Turkey bones and other scraps can go into the food waste caddy. Many leftovers can be frozen or reused.
  • Christmas trees can be recycled through St Helena Hospice's Treecycle scheme by signing up here or saw up and placed in the garden waste sacks/bin.

Cllr Jessica Scott-Boutell, Portfolio Holder for Waste and Sustainability, said: "To help everyone enjoy Christmas we're once again keeping recycling as easy as possible with minimal changes to festive collections.

"In our enthusiasm to make the day as magical as possible, we tend to buy, spend and ultimately waste far too much. This Christmas, we're asking everyone to give a little thought to the environment by paying attention to what they purchase and what they throw in the bin.

"Lots of recycling information and tips are available online and via social media for residents to have a green and great Christmas."

Collection days for householders will return to normal on Tuesday 2 January and the New Year's Day Bank Holiday will not affect collection days.

If you live in a flat with a communal collection point, your collections will resume from Wednesday 27 December.
