Winter launch of Big Community Switch helps Colchester residents save money

30 November 2017

Colchester's Big Community Switch is back! The innovative scheme, which offers residents the opportunity to see if they could save money on their energy bills, launches on 5 December 2017 and will be open for registration until 13 February 2018.

Colchester's Big Community Switch offers a simple online registration process requiring just an email address and recent energy bill. Anyone who registers will then receive a personalised offer from the 26 February 2018 outlining the savings they could make. There is no obligation to switch, however and anyone who does wish to switch will benefit from the whole process being handled by iChoosr - the scheme administrator.

The average saving per annum per household for Colchester residents is £207.00, and since the scheme began we have saved Colchester residents just over £204,000 on their energy bills.

Cllr Jessica Scott-Boutell, Portfolio Holder for Waste & Sustainability, said: "It's so simple to take part, and the figures show it doesn't pay to be loyal to your energy company, people that have stayed with the same supplier for many years are likely to be paying the highest tariffs.

"While you are registering yourself it's worth noting that you can also register up to four more households, so if you have older relatives or neighbours that can't register online, you can register for them!"

Colchester Borough Council is committed to reducing the number of households in the borough living in fuel poverty. Many households have to choose whether to heat or eat over the cold winter months, so reducing this situation for households has become a priority. By reducing the annual energy bills of residents, more homes will be warm this winter, and people will have more money in their pockets for essentials.'
