Additional Winter Garden Waste Collections Announced

Date published: 20 November 2017

Colchester Borough Council is offering a limited number of properties additional garden waste capacity from the beginning of December to the end of February.

Currently residents have a garden waste recycling kerbside collection of either one 240 litre wheelie bin or four garden sacks, all year round.

This limited offer will enable households to buy an additional garden waste wheelie bin or up to an additional four garden sacks. These additional containers will be collected on a Green Week, alongside their normal garden waste sacks/bin between 5 December and 9 March.

Cllr Jessica Scott-Boutell, Colchester Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Waste and Sustainability, said, "When we put the new collection service in place we allowed for some housing growth and therefore this year we have some capacity to allow us to offer this additional service for garden waste. We've listened to residents who say they would like additional capacity to recycle their garden waste and have looked at how we can do this.

"The additional service will be offered on a first come first served basis. The scheme is limited so that is can be delivered within existing resources and there is no guarantee that we will be able to do the same next year.

"The amount of garden waste collected has already increased by 14% since the new system was introduced, compared to the same period last year. This additional capacity will give residents, especially those with larger gardens, more convenience in getting rid of their garden waste between December and the beginning of March."

An additional garden waste wheelie bin will be £20 and garden sacks will be £5 each (maximum of four). These can be purchased online at and selecting 'Order' or by calling 01206 282700 (Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm).

Once purchased sacks/bin will be delivered by our Zone Team. A list of Frequently Asked Questions can be viewed on our website
