Visit Colchester sets its sights on group travel

Date issued: 9 October 2017

Hot on the heels of Colchester's recently released positive tourism figures, which show visitors and trips to the town are continuing to rise, Visit Colchester will be exhibiting at the annual Group Leisure & Travel show at the NEC Birmingham, on the 12 October.

The show, focusing on the group travel market, has been identified as a key area for growth by Visit Colchester and a priority for its current tourism campaign 'If Our Walls Could Talk'.

The one-day event will provide a fantastic opportunity to meet with group travel organisers and coach companies from across the country, and will enable Visit Colchester to showcase what the town and surrounding areas has to offer groups.

A key message that the team will be relaying is how easy it is now for groups to be dropped off in the heart of the town centre due to a designated limited waiting bay at the eastern end of the High Street. This provides coach-borne tourists with just a short walk to the town's most popular tourist attractions. This bay is in addition to an alternative coach drop off point on East Hill, which provides coach companies flexibility depending on their plans, a key concern for most organisers when choosing a town to visit.

Colchester has a lot to offer, from staggering architecture and a vibrant history, to a modern and bustling town centre that boasts a visionary future. From heritage and culture to the arts, and not forgetting a bit of retail therapy, Colchester provides groups a great day out just in the town centre alone. It can also be combined with so many popular group travel attractions on its doorstep such as the Dedham Vale in the heart of Constable Country, famous jam makers Wilkin and Sons and the world-famous Beth Chatto Gardens.

Cllr Tim Young, Deputy Leader of Colchester Borough Council, said: "Attending shows such as the Group Leisure & Travel show is pivotal in engaging with this hard to reach audience. Ensuring that Colchester is on operators' radars is essential to bringing more groups to the Borough. We are committed to making Colchester a top tier tourism destination in the East and we look forward to welcoming group operators soon."
