Date published: 19 September 2017

Leisure World Colchester is flinging open its doors on Wednesday 27 September to provide a selection of FREE activities for everyone as part of National Fitness Day 2017 - the most active day of the year.

National Fitness Day sees the nation celebrate the fun and thrills of physical activity. Throughout the UK, more than 20,000 free events will take place in gyms, leisure centres, parks, high streets, schools, universities and workplaces as over one million people lace up their trainers and embrace being active for the day.

The FREE events are: a Keiser Cycling class, designed to improve cardiovascular fitness and muscular strength on stationary bikes which is suitable for all, from 9.30-10.30am.

And an evening of all-body circuit training, using the Synergy 360 frame system and led by a specialised personal trainer, from 12-12.30pm.

The classes have limited spaces and can be booked online at, through the Leisure World app or pop along to the centre on Cowdray Avenue, from 20 September.

Squash and badminton courts are also free to book on the day, with badminton courts available between midday and 3pm and squash available from 10am to 4pm.

Councillor Annie Feltham, Colchester Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Commercial Services, said: "I'm thrilled that Leisure World is taking part in National Fitness Day again this year. It's an excellent way for us to engage with residents across the Borough to promote the benefits of physical activity by opening some of our facilities for free.

"We have always been keen to highlight the ongoing importance of people's health and wellbeing, and to be a part of something that does that on a national scale is hugely exciting."

You can get involved online by joining in with the social media campaign, exploring what fitness means to you, with the hashtag #Fitness2Me across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Steven Ward, CEO of National Fitness Day organiser ukactive, said: "National Fitness Day is a fantastic chance to spotlight physical activity and the role it plays in creating a healthier nation. These free events across the country provide a chance for everyone to experience the fun of fitness and carry forward healthy habits.

"The day also offers a fantastic opportunity for the physical activity sector to unlock new markets and attract new members by promoting the broad benefits of movement to the length and breadth of the British nation."
