Bandstand concert marks 125 years of the people in Castle Park

Date issued: 17 August 2017

A concert is to be staged in the Victorian Bandstand in Castle Park, on 20th August 2017, celebrating the 125th Anniversary of Castle Park.

The concert, starting at 12pm, will play host to a range of music from The Hat Check Honeys, The Harmonettes and The Sid Bolan Big Band.

As well as the concert, visitors can enjoy a marquee selling cream teas and other treats, and there will be an exhibition of old photographs of the Park. Free tours of the park entitled 'Castle Park - 2000 years in the Making' will also be taking place and these can be pre-booked with park rangers on 01206 282962.

Cllr Tina Bourne, Portfolio Holder for Housing and Communities, said: "The concert is a great opportunity to show some well-earned recognition to the people who work tirelessly to make Castle Park what it is today.

"Some of the work that has been achieved in Castle Park truly is astonishing. Anyone walking through the flower gardens or across the lawns can't fail to appreciate this beautiful park so close to Colchester's bustling hub."

The concert is just one of several events marking the 125 years since Castle Park first opened to the public. These include the planting of a 3D bedding display in June, the Castle Park Summer Education Passport, and a tree-planting ceremony in October recognising the official opening of the park to the public in 1892.

The exciting day of live music will also recognise the service and achievements of the park's gardeners and park rangers, both past and present, who have maintained the park for a century-and-a-quarter.

Former park gardeners, along with one guest, are invited to a seat in the VIP section, where they will receive a complimentary cream tea for two. They are asked to contact Colchester Borough Council via email parks@colchester.gov.uk or call 01206 282962, to book their place.
