Exciting new developments for sporting facilities at Northern Gateway

Date issued: 7 August 2017

The Council's new sports and leisure led development at Colchester's Northern Gateway is making positive steps towards progressing exciting new facilities, the latest cabinet paper released on an update of the project revealed.

These plans tie in with wider aims of the Council to promote the Northern Gateway as a major leisure destination. The national focus around health targets, promoting physical activity and a wellness lifestyle, are also reflected in the core ambitions for the project and are in line with the healthy lifestyle focus of Sport England.

The Council is working with several potential funders on bids to support different aspects of the project such as local highways infrastructure as well as the sports facilities for cycling, rugby and indoor cricket.  It is intended that the Council will develop strong links with health providers and align this with sports and leisure facilities at Colchester's Northern Gateway.

Councillor Annie Feltham, Portfolio Holder for Commercial Services, said: "I am delighted that at Cabinet we will be discussing the next stage in the development of our exciting plans for Northern Gateway.  Our previous press releases have set out the Council's vision for a ground-breaking leisure and employment complex which we are confident will attract visitors from Colchester and beyond.

"We will be supported by advice from specialist sports and leisure consultants and we will continue with our excellent contacts with the future operators of the facilities and with sports organisations. The plans for energy generation are just one aspect of our commitment to energy regeneration."

Colchester Borough Council is also investigating innovative forms of modular construction to achieve more economical and environmentally friendly solutions. The sports project is planned to be open by the autumn of 2019.
