Countryside events for August

The warmer weather has finally arrived and just in time for the summer countryside events programme throughout August. From health walks and bug hunts, to survival games and pixie quests - there's so much to do to get you and the little ones outdoors, enjoying the sunshine.

Before you visit, why not download the High Woods Wildlife Trail app? It will add another dimension to any visit and was developed in association with the Colchester Natural History Society. It can be downloaded via Google Play.

High Woods Country Park Visitor Centre is open at weekdays and weekends. Weekdays: 10am - 4.30pm; Weekends: 10.30am - 5pm until the autumn.

 

Dates for August

Wednesday 2 August: Creatures of the Deep at High Woods Country Park

10am - 12pm

Search the depths of the pond and discover the amazing creatures that live there. Then get creative and make your own pond life keepsake. Suitable for ages 5+. Friday 4 August: Friday Health Walk at High Woods Country Park

11am - 12 pm

FREE

Led by trained Health Walk Leaders, an ideal way to improve fitness or mobility in a sociable atmosphere. The walk follows a one mile circuit which can be repeated for those who want to go a bit further. Meet at the Visitor Centre. Tea and coffee afterwards. No need to book. Saturday 5 August: Summer Insects and Butterflies at Hilly Fields 

10am - 1pm

Join Colchester Natural History Society looking for butterflies and day flying moths as well as other grassland, heathland and tree insects, dragonflies and damselflies. Meet at Sussex Road Entrance CO3 3QX. FREE. Wednesday 9 August: Fairies and Pixies at High Woods Country Park

10am - 12pm

Join the Ranger in looking for signs of fairies and pixies in the woods. Build a fairy glade. Create a pixie picnic and discover the wonders of these magical folk. Suitable for ages 5+. Friday 11 August: Bat Evening at Lexden Park Local Nature Reserve

7.40pm - 9.40pm

Meet the Ranger for a led walk around Lexden Park identifying the different bat species using bat detectors. Usually exceptional sightings of bats are gained over the lake. Please bring a torch. £4.30 per adult, children FREE. Lexden Park Car Park

Sunday 13 August: Sunday Stroll at High Woods Country Park

11am - 12 pm

FREE

A three mile Ranger led walk through the Country Park on varying terrain. Sturdy footwear advisable. Meet at the Visitor Centre. Tea and coffee afterwards. No need to book. Tel 01206 853588 for more information.

 

Sunday 13 August: Volunteer Taster Day at High Woods Country Park:

Wednesday 16 August: Dens and Survival Games at High Woods Country Park

10am - 12pm

Can you build a den that can stand up to the 'rain shower test' with you and your tribe inside? Then create a piece of natural art to take home. Wear suitable clothing and sturdy footwear. Sunday 20 August: Demonstration of Wood Crafts - Pole Lathe Turning and Pyrography

10am - 3pm

Pole lathe turning is an ancient craft, dating back to at least Viking times, using a foot/leg operated lathe to turn cylindrical wooden objects. You are invited to 'try your hand'. Children welcome depending on size. You can also have a go at pyrography for £1 (drawing with a hot pen) and create your own wooden keyring or pendant to take away (£2+). Wednesday 23 August: Brilliant Bug Hunt at High Woods Country Park.

10am - 12pm

Explore the woodland and wildflower meadows to discover the bugs, butterflies and other minibeasts living here. How many can you find using our bug pots and sweep nets? Join the Ranger and turn detective. Try and find out which creatures have left trails and signs around the park. Create your own tracks in clay to take home with you. Suitable for ages 6+. Children welcome depending on size. You can also have a go at pyrography for £1 (drawing with a hot pen) and create your own wooden keyring or pendant to take away (£2+). Nordic Walking: Group sessions on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.

High Woods Country Park

Nordic walking is a unique form of exercise that benefits everybody, from those with medical problems to the super fit. In partnership with Kardia Health and Wellbeing, High Woods has become the first Nordic Walking Park in England. There is also a 3 mile way-marked Nordic walking trail.
