Single Equality Scheme
After successfully achieving Level 3 of the Equality Standard for Local Government in March 2009, the Council has now implemented a Single Equality Scheme to replace its existing individual disability, gender and race equality schemes.
The aim of this change is to allow the Council to focus on delivering its aims, objectives and actions for all stands of equality and diversity, as well as meeting statutory requirements under equalities legislation. This includes Disability Discrimination Acts 1995 and 2005, Equality Act 2006, Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000, Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2006, Employment Equality (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2003, Employment Equality (Religions or Belief) Regulations 2003, Equality Act (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2007.
The Equality Act 2010 provides a new cross-cutting legislative framework to protect the rights of individuals and advance equality of opportunity for all; to update, simplify and strengthen the previous legislation; and to deliver a simple, modern and accessible framework of discrimination law which protects individuals from unfair treatment and promotes a fair and more equal society.
