In total 2000 new homes will be built as part of the new sustainable community in East Colchester.

The majority of the new housing in this area is being provided alongside the River Colne, the site of the town's former port. This will coincide with improvements to the area's public realm with new lighting and street furniture making the area more attractive for residents and visitors.

As well as the construction of new modern buildings, some existing buildings will be redeveloped which characterise the area and give an idea of the areas important maritime heritage.

Several housing developments have been completed and are transforming the area alongside new community facilities, including a 120 place nursery / child day care centre, an enterprise centre and community centre as well as business and leisure units.

The University of Essex has also taken advantage of the location creating new student accommodation alongside the river at University Quays.
