University Knowledge Gateway

Also planned is the development of some 43 acres of the campus.   The Gateway park will accommodate new high technology businesses, which will benefit from working closely with the academic and research expertise of the University, as well as a whole range of commercial companies with requirements for high quality office accommodation in the Colchester area.

Business Incubation Centre

Plans for the development of a business incubation centre with a net let-able area in excess of 20,000 sq ft (1858 m2) are also being considered, which will act as a catalyst to the creation of the Knowledge Gateway park as a sub regional business location.

Plans for the further development of the University site include residential, hotel, leisure and retail units.

January saw the official opening of a new Business School at the University of Essex.  The new venture is located in a £21m carbon neutral building which features sustainable elements including a 'living' roof, has its own micro-climate and has been designed to lower its carbon dioxide emissions to a level where it is completely carbon neutral.

The business school is part of the University's largest expansion in its 50 year history and follows the opening of the £26m Silberrad Student Centre last year. The new business school, has a 250 seat lecture theatre and a new library, and also provides the University's 13,000 students with experience of a real trading floor via terminals offering data, information and analytics direct from worldwide business company Bloomberg.

The school creates a collaborative environment where students, staff and business partners can work together to solve global business challenges and enable students to develop the knowledge, skills and integrity to flourish in a global marketplace.
