North Station master plan

North Station plans

  • The North Station area is recognised as a key Urban Gateway to the town in Colchester's Core Strategy.
  • The location benefits from high levels of accessibility and presents opportunities for redevelopment and improvement.
  • However, it is recognised that the area currently suffers from high levels of traffic congestion, conflicting use of space and a poor urban environment.
  • CBC therefore chose to commission consultants to produce a Master Plan that would improve the sense of arrival in Colchester and create a better public realm.
  • Consultants Terence O'Rourke, Buro Happold, and Hamilton-Baillie Associates were commissioned in January 2009.
  • A stakeholder workshop was held in March 2009 and was followed by a public consultation on emerging ideas in May 2009.
  • The third section of the Northern Approaches Road (NAR3) has recently been completed.  In addition the bus lane to the second section (NAR2), and the park and ride will also be developed.  Further ideas are being developed to accommodate the traffic which will be generated from junction 28 on the A12 together with other planned residential developments in North Colchester.
