Vineyard Gate Development

Plans are currently being developed for a 150,000 sq ft shopping centre in the St Botolph's area of the town centre at the site of the current Vineyard Street car park.

Vineyard Gate will be a contemporary shopping development that will be fully integrated with the town centre, aimed at attracting new high profile retailers to enhance Colchester's national position as a quality shopping centre. It will include modern units for national retailers looking to locate in Colchester. The proposals will provide a proper setting for the historic Town Wall and retain and incorporate a number of other historical structures and buildings that add to the character of the town centre. Views to St Botolph's Church and St John's Abbeygate will also be created from within the development, emphasising the scheme's unique identity and strong local character. Furthermore, the development will create a new gateway to the town centre by improving links with southern parts of Colchester including the Garrison site.

The recession delayed the project which has been redesigned as smaller scheme more appropriate to retailing after the recession.   The scheme however, is still a significant extension to the current shopping areas and will include in excess of 150,000sq ft of retail, a new car park, new pedestrian and cycle links and an attractive area of public realm adjacent to the Town Wall.

Legal negotiations with the developer will be concluded shortly and this will enable work to commence on a planning application process.
