Economic Growth

What is Economic Growth & what does it mean to Colchester?

Places compete with each other for investment and the jobs it brings.  Economic growth is the result of this investment which can also bring supporting facilities like roads, broadband and improved public services.

Colchester is one of the fastest growing districts in the country in terms of population.  More facilities are needed for this growing population.  Colchester is an investment hotspot with some £3bn being invested across five regeneration areas in North Colchester, St Botolph's in the town centre, the Garrison, The Hythe and also at the Knowledge Gateway at the University of Essex.

Over the next 15 years, the East of England will grow faster than any other region in the country. Colchester has been earmarked as a place to grow in response to this - with 18,800 new homes by 2023 and 14,000 new jobs by 2021

Colchester has an exceptional heritage, but some areas are in need of investment. We now have the opportunity to regenerate these areas as the town grows creating vibrant new communities, mainly on brownfield sites.

Colchester borough Council works in partnership with a variety of public and private sector partners to seek, secure and bring this investment to life in the Borough and these pages of the website explain what is planned and what is happening currently.
