About Building Control

Colchester Borough Building Control  is committed to providing a fast, proactive, customer focused service for our clients and the residents of the Borough.

We offer a combination of the traditional values of public service, independence and accountability with a modern flexible approach to ensure  the smooth progress of any project be it large or small. We strive to maintain the highest professional standards and business ethics in our approach to administering the requirements of the regulations.

Our aim is to help users of the service to achieve compliance with the Building Regulations in the most cost effective manner whilst maintaining their original design concept. To this end we are happy to provide free pre submission advice and work with you to develop your scheme, which with larger projects  can result in considerable cost savings . We have close links with other Local Authority services including  Essex County Fire and Rescue and are able to offer the development team approach which is unique to Local Authority Building Control.

Applications once submitted are generally examined and amendment notifications dispatched within 5 days of validation.

Our team of highly qualified experienced surveyors are able to provide a prompt and efficient service due to their close proximity to all projects within the Borough coupled with their unparalleled  local knowledge.

Only Local Authority Building Control has the legal powers to prosecute those who fail to comply with the requirements of the Building Regulations.

The section also deals with notifications of demolitions, dangerous structures and sits on the Safety Advisory Group of the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

Dangerous Structures

If you have any concerns about the safety of any structure, for example, a building, a wall, a fence, loose roof tiles, you should report it to the Building Control Office.

If you are having construction or refurbishment work done, you may need to notify the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and you may have other duties as well. To find out more information click on the icon below.
