Food Business Approval

Licence Summary

If you operate food premises you may need to be approved by your local authority under Regulation (EC) No. 853/2004.

Premises producing foods containing products of animal origin for sale to other businesses may need to be "approved" by Colchester Borough Council or the Food Standards Agency, rather than registered.  If you are unsure whether any aspect of your food operations would require your establishment to be approved, please contact Colchester Borough Council for guidance.

Examples of types of premises that are required to be approved by local authorities are stand alone (i.e. not attached to a slaughter house, cutting plant or game handling establishment):

  • meat processing plants
  • meat preparation plants
  • minced meat processing operations and mechanically separated meat processing plants
  • cold stores

Please note that any businesses requiring this type of approval cannot start to produce certain foods until approval has been granted.

No provision in legislation.

FeeNo fee is payable for making an application for an Approved Food Business.
