Country Parks and Local Nature Reserves

Colchester Borough Council owns and manages three country parks, and eleven nature reserves in and around the town. Many are hidden gems in the heart of Colchester. They provide facilities for both local residents and visitors to enjoy a range of countryside recreation opportunities as well as being important sites for wildlife. Leaf Icon High Woods Country Park High Woods Country Park is one of Colchester's beauty spots. The Country Park includes woodland, open spaces, a lake and wildflower meadows. Leaf Icon Colne Local Nature Reserve The Colne LNR lies on the north side of the river Colne on rising ground between Essex University and Wivenhoe. Leaf Icon Cymbeline Meadows Cymbeline Meadows is a 74 ha area of working farm land comprising a rich variety of habitats including pastures, arable fields, meadows, woodland and the meandering river Colne. Leaf Icon Gosbecks Archaeological Park Gosbecks Archaeological Park covers 65 hectares, and is mainly flat grassland and farmland. It is popular with walkers, horse riders and cyclists. Leaf Icon Lexden Park Local Nature Reserve Lexden Park LNR at seven hectares is a relatively small reserve, which is a haven for walkers and lovers of fauna and flora. Leaf Icon Lexden Springs Local Nature Reserve Lexden Springs Local Nature Reserve, know locally as 'The Loop', was declared a Nature Reserve in 1990 and was the first Local Nature Reserve to be opened in Colchester. Leaf Icon Salary Brook Local Nature Reserve This river valley corridor covering 48 acres constitutes an important urban wildlife area and comprises a wealth of habitats including pasture, grassland, marsh, fishing ponds and the brook itself. Leaf Icon Hilly Fields Open all day, every day this 80 acre nature reserve is designated as a Local Wildlife Site and a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Leaf Icon Westlands Country Park Westlands Country Park covers an area of approximately 16 hectares of woodland and open grassland.
