Bokashi kitchen composter

Date Published: 5 November 2009

Bokashi1The Bokashi starter pack is available for half price to Essex residents only for £25 plus £5 delivery.  The pack contains 2 buckets, full instructions, scoop, inner drain tray and 2-months supply of Bokashi bran. The pack can be purchased online or by calling 0845 130 6090.

Every time you place some food waste into the airtight container, sprinkle it with a scoop of Bokashi and press the material down. Bokashi is a bran-based material coated with micro-organisms that begin to digest the waste and neutralises any smells.

Once the first bucket is full, leave the waste to ferment with the lid tightly shut and start filling the second bucket. After a rest of 10-14 days add the fermented waste to your home compost bin, which may speed up the composting process without attracting vermin, or bury it directly into your garden. If you do not have a compost bin or enough space in your garden to bury the fermented waste, check if any of your family, friends or neighbours would want your Bokashi compost before you order a starter pack.

The liquid generated should be drained off using the tap. It is alive with beneficial microbes and can be diluted as a plant feed or poured down drains to prevent algae build up and odours.

Further supplies of Bokashi bran can be purchased  online
